DBA work has involved more or less consistent task patterns such as database installation and configuration, patching, performing and verifying backups, scheduling health-checks and proactive maintenance, troubleshooting ETL jobs, ad-hoc performance tuning and dealing with service requests such as user password resetting, data cloning and compliance scanning and remediation. However Cloud Computing (or simply, the Cloud) is seemingly a game-changer for IT organizations, and significantly impacts these standard DBA task patterns.
Does the Cloud automate everything that a DBA does? Does the Cloud mark the end of the DBA career? Or is the Cloud an enabler of new opportunities for the DBA? Regardless of the diverse opinions stated in popular industry blogs, one key fact does emerge: the Cloud architecture poses new implementation, security and maintenance challenges and DBAs must reinvent themselves to remain relevant in the era of the Cloud.
This presentation demystifies the Cloud, explains the benefits it brings both DBAs and IT user communities, while delving into the new roles and responsibilities of the DBA for the Cloud (DBA 2.0).
