December 12, 2007 Verizon taps Hostway for wholesale Web hosting; Hostopia left out in cold
Verizon is back in the consumer and SMB hosting game through a new wholesale hosting agreement with Hostway. The agreement will see Hostway supply shared hosting in three different packages priced at $9.95, $14.95 and $24.95 through the Verizon Small Business Center.
There is an interesting sub-plot to how this deal unfolded. T1R readers will recall that Web hosting wholesaler Hostopia won the Verizon hosting deal from Web.com back in 2005 (formerly Interland and now a part of Website Pros) – a deal involving approximately 15,000 end users. Those customers were a part of the Verizon information systems division, which operated SuperPages. Since then, SuperPages has been spun out of Verizon and is now Idearc Corporation (and Hostopia remains Idearc's wholesale Web hosting provider).
When Verizon decided it wanted to get back into hosting, this time it would be through its Small Business Center. But it didn't give Hostopia a proposal opportunity despite their previously strong relationship. This happened largely because the persons responsible for the deal within Verizon were new and from different divisions, and were not even aware of the previous relationship between Hostopia and Verizon – and we can't really blame Verizon, since SuperPages had been spun out of the company. All this is not to say that Hostway won this deal based on anything less than full merits. But it seems like Hostopia was (unlucky for it) left out of the proposal process. So Hostopia didn't lose a deal here, since it wasn't even part of the competitive process, and Verizon elected to go with Hostway (who likely beat out others) in what is essentially a new hosting startup within Verizon.
Regardless of how this came about, this is a nice win for Hostway, which has expanded its wholesale hosting capabilities through its acquisition of Affinity, and will continue to take on Hostopia in future contract competitions.

Hostway, a privately held mass-market hosting provider, has enhanced its Local Business Profile service. The service gives hosting customers an easy way to be found online through listings on search engines and online directories. Customers fill out an online form and Hostway uses their information to produce the business profile that gets submitted. The service is priced at $129 a year for submission to a full range of search engines and directories, but only $36 per year for a more limited number of submissions.
This is certainly a great offering that small businesses will value. A typical small business does not have the time or inclination to research all the relevant places where it should be listed. In addition, it is not likely to know much about keywords and how search engines work. With this much value being offered, businesses would be very wise to take Hostway up on its offer.
Hostway's service helps customers submit their profiles to Google and Yahoo Local, which is a smart move. With more people searching for businesses through local directories or mapping services, it is imperative that businesses be found there. T1R has argued that hosters should look to monetize listing to services such as these, since the typical customer often does not understand the value of being listed and has no clue how to get it done. This speaks to the role hosters must assume as competition intensifies: deliver value to customers by advising and showing them all the small things they need to do to be successful online. Delivering such value not only builds trust and gains loyal customers, but also additional revenue streams.

Research by web hosting services specialist Hostway has found that 44 percent of IT managers are tired of being forced into buying more storage than they need when investing in extra capacity for future growth.
The negative ramifications of this were twofold, said Hostway channel director David Foxley. “In the short term it costs money. Why spend the cash now when you can spend it later on? Certainly on some large storage environment you can be looking at spending over pound £7,000.”
The second problem highlighted by the research was that with the pace of innovation as fast as ever, by the time the user got round to needing the extra capacity the technology was out of date and needed replacing anyway.
Hostway also discovered that 46 percent had been forced to use below par solutions as they were unable to afford the optimal kit of their needs.
Mark Butcher, general sales manager at IT infrastructure services provider Anix, agreed the problem was getting out of hand, but said IT managers themselves needed to take a look at how they bought storage. “Most customers are fed up with buying too much but they aren't doing anything about it because they treat it as a commodity,” he said.
Butcher added that customers just wanted the best price, which encouraged vendors to load them up with too much kit.
With margins in managed hosting services running as high as ten percent and as low as two percent on hardware, Foxley was keen to push Hostway's reseller channel towards adopting this model, allowing customers to buy pay-per-gigabyte storage as and when they needed it.
John Greenwood, sales directory at storage solutions provider NCE, was not so sure that hosted storage services were a panacea, especially if the client was not willing to hand over control of their data. “I could well turn around and upgrade my storage then ask for more money,” he said. “Up front it is a good investment, but things can change when it comes to renewal.”
